The Calgary Winter Club runs an integrated facility and membership management system, which is hosted on a Linux file server. The software runs on a network of DOS/Windows-based PCs, while the server runs Linux and Samba.

Linux has made automated backups, remote (dial-in) administration and remote software updates easier and more economical. The price of the server software didn't hurt either...

Among the benefits of the Linux server is the server's ability to handle a real-time data interface over a serial line between the facility management system and a commercial point of sale system. As club members try to make charges against their accounts, their numbers and account status are verified in real time against the club database, by a daemon that runs on the Linux system. When charges are closed, they are also posted to the facility management system, in real-time. These tasks would require an extra, dedicated PC in the DOS world...
