We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit incorporated in Michigan. We are a service organization dedicated to providing friendship to those sixty and older. We also provide a core group of services to the elderly, free of charge. They include transportation to and from the doctor, firewood cutting, check cashing, visiting, advocacy with government agencies, parties to observe birthdays, social activities for the homeboud, and parties on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter Days.

We are funded privately, mostly by small donations through a mailing list.

Linux has saved us bundles of money. We use the Infomagic Workgroup Server.



Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly uses Linux for the following functions:

  • X-Windows terminal (display, keyboard, mouse -- applications run elsewhere)
  • X-Windows server (runs applications, possibly exports display)

  • Samba server for a network of PCs.
  • NFS server for other PCs and Unix systems.

  • Print spooler using lpd (Unix, NFS clients)
  • Print spooler using samba (PC clients)
• Fax spooler:
  • Fax server for outgoing fax transmissions.
• Modem communications:
  • Users can dial-out using a (possibly shared) shared modem.
  • Users can initiate PPP connections to remote systems.
• Office productivity software:
  • Document preparation with ApplixWare.
• Internet client software - WWW
  • NetScape Navigator.
  • Other browsers.
• Internet client software - mail
  • Mail.
  • Netscape's mail client.
• Network management:
  • Internet or WAN router.
  • Internet or WAN firewall.
• Electronic mail server:
  • POP-3 server.

• Network services provided to local users:
