Computer sales, consulting, and networking. I am a one-person company. I perform computer services for local customers as a side job. My Linux machine is a mainly a file server, WWW development testbed, and Internet proxy. I'm very happy that I can use old hardware with Linux and get decent performance.



Hall Technologies uses Linux for the following functions:

  • Samba server for a network of PCs.
• Print server:
  • Print spooler using lpd (Unix, NFS clients)
  • Print spooler using samba (PC clients)
• Modem communications:
  • Users can dial-out using a (possibly shared) shared modem.
  • Users can initiate PPP connections to remote systems.
• Office productivity software:
  • Document preparation with ApplixWare.
  • Document preparation with LyX.
  • Document preparation with TeX, LaTeX and derivatives.
  • Other document management.
• Internet client software - WWW
  • NetScape Navigator.
  • Lynx.
• Internet client software - mail
  • Netscape's mail client.
• Network management:
  • Internet or WAN firewall.
• Network services provided to local users:
  • HTTP (World-Wide Web) server or cache.
  • ``Regular'' (user-ID and password required) ftp server.
  • Accepts telnet connections.
• Software development tools:
  • C and/or C++
  • Perl
  • Tcl/Tk
  • Bourne, Korn, C or another shell; using sed, awk, grep and similar tools.
