Definition of Remote Access Server

A Remote Access Server is a server, normally equipped with one or more modems, which allows remote users to dial in and establish temporary connections to a network. Network connections are usually supported using the PPP protocol.

General purpose computers, running Windows NT, Unix or NetWare can be equipped with sofware that provides this service. Alternately, dedicated hardware can be used for the same task.
