Definition of Network File System

A Network File System is any software and network protocols that support the sharing of files by multiple users over a network. On Unix systems, this is usually implemented using the NFS protocol, which relies on UDP/IP. On Windows NT systems, this is usually implemented with the SMB protocol, which in turn can be implemented over IPX, NetBEUI or TCP/IP. On NetWare systems, this is usually implemented with the NCPFS protocol, which in turn relies on IPX.
